Japan is a wonderful destination in every season, but the best time for your trip depends on what you want to see, how you like to travel, and how busy you want the famous sights to be. Here is a simple season-by-season guide to help you choose.

Spring: cherry blossom season

Spring is Japan at its most famous. Cherry blossom, or sakura, usually appears from late March into April in Tokyo and Kyoto, with blossom moving north as the season progresses. Parks, riversides and temple gardens fill with soft pink flowers, and evening illuminations make the blossom glow after dark. This is also the most popular season, so hotels and trains should be booked well ahead.

Summer: festivals and Hokkaido

Summer brings warm weather, lively festivals, fireworks and green landscapes. It is a good season for Hokkaido, where the weather is cooler than in much of Japan and flower fields around Furano and Biei are in bloom. Pack light clothing, stay hydrated, and allow extra time for rain showers.

Autumn: colours and clear days

Autumn is many travellers' favourite season. From around November, maple trees turn vivid red and gold in Kyoto, Nikko and other historic towns, and the air is often clear and comfortable for walking. Autumn colours, like cherry blossom, do not appear on exactly the same dates every year, so a flexible itinerary helps.

Winter: snow, hot springs and festivals

Winter is the season for snow. The Japanese Alps, Hokkaido and other snow country areas offer deep snow, winter festivals and relaxing hot springs. If you enjoy snowy landscapes and quieter temples, winter can be a magical and rewarding time to visit.

Which season should you choose?

Choose spring for cherry blossom, summer for festivals and Hokkaido, autumn for colours and comfortable sightseeing, and winter for snow and hot springs. There is no single wrong choice — only the season that fits your interests best.
