Cherry blossom season is the most sought-after time to visit Japan, and 2027 will be no exception. Sakura does not bloom everywhere on the same day, so understanding the usual pattern helps you plan a trip that is timed for flowers, not just for dates on a calendar.

When does sakura usually bloom?

In a typical year, cherry blossom reaches Tokyo and Kyoto in late March and continues into April, with the full-bloom period lasting about a week in each place. Blossom then moves north, so northern Japan blooms later in spring. Exact dates vary with the weather each year, so build a little flexibility into your itinerary and choose a route that covers more than one blossom region.

Where to see it

In Tokyo, Ueno Park is a classic choice, with wide paths under rows of cherry trees. In Kyoto, the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park and the grounds around Kiyomizu-dera are beautiful in blossom season. Hakone adds a different view, with blossom set against lakes, mountains and, on a clear day, Mt. Fuji. Evening illuminations in many parks make the blossom worth seeing after dark as well.

How to enjoy blossom without the stress

Book early. Cherry blossom is Japan's busiest season for hotels, trains and popular sights, and the best located hotels are often reserved months ahead. Travel with a private coach and guide if you want to avoid crowded station transfers, and plan your most popular sights for early morning where possible. Pack a light jacket for cool evenings, and remember that blossom is weather-dependent — a good itinerary has wonderful sights even if a particular tree is past its peak.

Why booking early matters for 2027

For spring 2027, early booking is especially important. It gives you a better choice of hotels, more time to arrange flights, and a better chance to secure a private coach and English-speaking guide for your group. It also lets your itinerary be shaped around the blossom forecast as it develops, rather than fitted around what is left.
