Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: Japan's Snow Corridor Explained

Few journeys in Japan are as dramatic as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. It crosses the Northern Japan Alps using a series of cable cars, buses, a trolleybus and a ropeway, and its most famous sight is a corridor of snow that towers over the road in spring.

What is the Snow Corridor?

After a winter of heavy snowfall, the road through the Tateyama area is cleared to create the Snow Corridor, known in Japanese as Yuki no Otani. In the weeks after the route opens, visitors can walk between walls of snow that can reach many metres high. The corridor is at its most dramatic soon after opening, and the snow walls gradually become lower as the season progresses.

When does the route open?

The Alpine Route typically opens in mid-April for the spring season. That timing makes it a natural addition to a spring trip, especially for travellers who want to combine cherry blossom in the lowlands with snow in the mountains. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so warm layers, good walking shoes and a flexible plan are sensible even in spring.

How does the route work?

The route is a crossing, not a return trip. Travellers usually travel from Tateyama Station on one side to Ogizawa on the other, or in the reverse direction, using several different forms of transport along the way. Highlights include the highland plateau at Murodo, the snow corridor itself, the Kurobe Dam, and views across the alpine landscape. Because it is a one-way crossing, it is important to plan your start and end points, luggage arrangements and onward travel in advance.

Practical tips

Wear layers and waterproof footwear, carry water, and allow a full day for the crossing. Check the weather before you go, and keep your camera ready — the contrast between deep snow, blue sky and green valleys is one of Japan's great spring sights.
